Alex SpurkelAlex Spurkel has taught doumbek (Arabic drumming) at Levantine Cultural Center since 2008. In his classes on Tuesday evenings, students learn proper doumbek technique, Middle Eastern rhythms, drills for speed & timing, fills and embellishments, improvisation, soloing, playing with belly dancers and more.

Alex has been playing doumbek professionally for over 10 years and has been teaching since 2000. Having apprenticed with master Lebanese drummer Souhail Kaspar, Alex is one of the few Westerners qualified to teach classic Arabic style. With a great sense for breaking things down and a patient and fun teaching style, Alex has become one of LA's most sought after teachers.
