Sunday, March 11, 2007, 4 pm

Nathalie Handal, Vanessa Hidary, Sholeh Wolpé and Tina Demirdjian will perform new and recent poems in a commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the Iraq war, in the spirit of peace. Music by DJ Al Fareed, videography by Yo Suzuki. Followed by reception.

Palestinian poet, playwright and author Nathalie Handal is the editor of the award-winning The Poetry of Arab Women, A Contemporary Anthology, The Lives of Rain and several other books. She has lived in Europe, the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Middle East. Read her detailed bio here.

Sholeh Wolpé is a poet, literary translator and writer. She is the author of Sin—Poetry of Forugh Farrokhzad (University of Arkansas Press, Sept. 2007), The Scar Saloon (Red Hen Press), and a poetry CD (Refuge Studios). Her poems, translations, essays and reviews have appeared in scores of literary journals, periodicals and anthologies worldwide, and have been translated into several languages. Detailed bio.

Native New Yorker Vanessa Hidary, who is of Syrian Jewish heritage, grew up on Manhattan’s culturally diverse Upper West Side, graduating from LaGuardia High School of the Arts and Hunter College. She is a poet, actor and playwright. Her experiences as a Sephardic Jew with close friends from different ethnic and religious backgrounds inspired her to write Culture Bandit, a solo show that chronicles Vanessa’s coming of age during the golden age of Hip-Hop and her dedication to fostering understanding and friendship between all people. Tina Demirdjian's first book,
Imprint, was published in 2003.  A selection of Demirdjian's works have also appeared in Aspora, Ararat International Journal, the Los Angeles Times, High Performance, Midwest Poetry Review, the Texas Observer, and in Birthmark: a bi-lingual anthology of Armenian-American poetry, published in 1999.  She is the recipient of three honorable mentions from the Arroyo Arts Collective's Poetry in the Windows contests.  Detailed bio.
