Concert
in the Key of Peace
6 pm reception, 7 pm concert
July 10, 2005
A
festive concert of great Middle Eastern music, blessings and a
documentary short on peacemaking. A portion of the proceeds from
Sulha Raivolution will go to the Sulha Peace Project.
Sulha is the traditional Arab reconciliation ceremony that has
been integrated and uplifted to include in it Jews and other religious
groups, with the intention to learn about what each culture and
religion has to offer, through sharing thoughts, ideas and concerns,
and engaging in deeply connected listening circles. Sulha Raivolution
is an outgrowth of the Sulha Peace Project started among Palestinians
and Israelis in 2001. See www.sulha.com.
A Tunisian-born singer and songwriter, MC Rai began his
career at a very early age. As a youth he was immersed in the
folk music traditions of "Chaabi" or "Mizoued,"
as it is known in Tunisia. Today he is creating a new blend of
Rai music with other exotic and intriguing musical influences.
His voice is memerizing and his up-beat performance invites kinetic
movement on the dance floor. Together with Omar Fadel of
Egypt, Anis Seheri of Tunisia and Nissim Malul of Israel,
the group produces a magnificent blend of traditional and postmodern
musical vibes.
Vocal artist Glenda Benevides brings together a wonderful
blend of jazz, R&B, Latin and world music influences from
east and west, performing with her World Tribe. Glenda's voice contains power, beauty, and love.
Her stage presence radiates compassion. Glenda's calling is first
and foremost that of a vocalist. Her voice casts a spell, from
a sultry growl to a heavenly lilt. Her connection with the audience
is intimate and open. Her voice oozes sensuality and passion and
delivers raw power. Like the classic jazz divas of old, Glenda
captures a powerful mystique that enraptures her audience.
Reception,
6-7 pm, features refreshments and Mideast vendors (jewelry,
clothing, books and CDs).
Concert, 7-9:30 pm, features the Sulha documentary (20
ms.), the MC Rai Ensemble [About
MC Rai] with Nissim Malul [About

More
about Nissim Malul and Shalom
Salaam Productions:
"There is no war outside of us, the real war is within ourselves."
Nissim's work for peace between Arabs and Jews has led him to
produce large scale Arab-Jewish peace events and concerts (in
affiliation with the Sulha Peace Project in Israel-Palestine),
to demonstrate his belief that real peace can be achieved only
when people relate to each other on a human level, setting politics
aside and stepping into the other person's world. His events included
sharing circles where each person has an opportunity to share
what he is present to in his feelings, thoughts and ideas, and
to be heard and acknowledged, sharing customs, rituals, food,
music and dance.
"To create real peace we must break all the barriers and
stereotypes about each other and see the human side."
