Jan.30 (Wed.), 8:00 pm—The Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief at the Improv

Many Americans can relate to having parents of different ethnic or cultural backgrounds, or being the children of immigrants and living between the culture of the old country and their American identity. On Wednesday, Jan. 30, the Sultans of Satire come to The Improv for the first time, where they will present comedy and satire on their cultural identities as Americans of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean heritage, featuring Jordanian Mike Batayeh, Peter the Persian, Elham Jazab (Iranian-American), Gulden (Turkish-American), Noel Elgrably (Moroccan-Israeli); Ara Basil, who is Armenian and Persian; and emerging comedian Shereen Faltas (Egypt-U.S.) Visit the new Sultans web site and read comedian bios.

The Sultans of Satire show has captivated audiences throughout Southern California since 2005, and ran for eight months at the Laugh Factory. The Jan. 30 show features an impressive line-up of some of today’s most talented comedians of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean heritage.

Says Jordan Elgrably, the show's creator and artistic director of the Levantine Cultural Center, "Each of these comedians, though they come from cultures that are often in conflict, has come to really respect each other. They represent all the major religions and most of the Middle East and North Africa. The show uses humor and satire to convey a message of peace and unity among us all. After the events of 9/11 and the resulting vilification of most things Arab or Muslim, this has become the mission of Levantine Center."

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 8:00 pm (doors 7:30 pm), Sultans of Satire: Middle East Comic Relief, The Improv, 8162 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood CA 90046. [Map]. Please call 310.657.5511 for reservations. Tickets $18.

These irreverent comedians spoof the "clash of civilizations" between "us" and "them", between America/the West and the Arab/Muslim East. They also have fun with culture, family and identity. They are funny people who also work steadily as dramatic/comedic actors in film, television and theatre.

A portion of the proceeds benefits Levantine Center's programs for peace through arts.

General Admission:
$18 per person

Join us this special evening of edgy humor, where these stalwarts are certain to lampoon sacred cows, take poetic license and otherwise eliminate common ennui.
