an evening of Mediterranean/Middle East world music fusing east and west
On June 28, 2012 the Levantine Cultural Center will kick off a new Middle Eastern/North African world music series with WAHID, a dialogue between Chris Wabich on frame drums and Dimitris Mahlis on oud, bringing genre-defying approaches to composition and improvisation. Both in his compositions and playing, Greek-born Mahlisskillfully draws from Greek, Persian, Carnatic, and Western jazz traditions; in his hands, the oud deftly transforms into a multi-dimensional stringed instrument echoing these traditions. This summer, the Levantine Center will become L.A.'s new destination for intimate Middle Eastern music experiences, with new ensembles performing each week. Upcoming artists include Momo Loudiyi (Morocco), Hamid Saedi (Iran), Tony Khalifé (Lebanon), and the Avas Nahas World Percussion Ensemble (Egypt). Listen/watch.
Levantine Cultural Center champions a greater understanding of the Middle East and North Africa by presenting artistic and educational programs that bridge political and religious divides.
